"Oh maturity's a wrapped up package deal, or so it seems.
And ditching teenage fantasy means ditching all your dreams
All your friends and peers and family solemnly tell you, you will
Have to grow up be an adult yeah be bored and unfulfilled
Oh but no one's yet explained to me exactly what's so great
About slaving 50 years away on something that you hate,
About meekly shuffling down the path of mediocrity
Well if that's your road then take it but it's not the road for me!"
--from the song "Photosynthesis" by Frank Turner
I can relate so well to the words of this song. It seems like Frank Turner and I are fighting the same battle in this particular case. For my whole life, I've heard about how important it is to make the best grades, to get into the best school, to get the best job, and make the most money. And things like ambition and money are not necessarily bad things. But, when they become the ultimate things, you've got a serious problem. They will STOP you from following God (i.e. the rich young ruler from Matthew 19:16-23) . And...the big secret is...THEY DON'T SATISFY! This kind of ambition pulls people, especially men, into a downward spiral, and I have experienced and witnessed this firsthand. Because of these realizations, I am determined to do something important with my life, something that I love, something that really, truly matters in light of eternity. In my first year out of college, I want that thing to be the World Race.
When I first started thinking about how to accomplish this goal, I could only think of one thing. I know it sounds cheesy, but the thing was love. I mean, what is more important than loving people? But love can be a very confusing thing. Ask 10 people what love is, and you'll probably get 10 different answers. When terms become that broad, they tend to lose their meaning. The analogy I like to use is "rock n roll." The term "rock n roll" can be used to describe anything from the Jonas Brothers to SlipKnot, two very, very different bands. I feel like love is the same way; it means vastly different things to different people. I believe that love is seen in its purest, truest form in the Gospel. "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21). I want to love sacrificially, like Jesus did, and I feel like the World Race is the best way for me to do this.
In fact, as Christians, we are commanded to love. In Mark 12:28-31, Jesus says that loving God and loving people are the two greatest commandments of all. But how does one do this? Do you have to do both? Is it possible to do one without the other? Brace yourselves folks, because I'm about to say something crazy! I believe you have to love God to truly love people, and I feel like 1 John 5:1-3 supports this conclusion. You can help people in a myriad of ways, and Christians are certainly supposed to do ALL of those things. But, if you do these things without sharing the love of Christ with those you're helping, I believe you are ignoring their greatest need of all, and, ultimately, you are doing them little good! It's like John Piper said, "I believe their is a higher joy than having your belly full." Loving God and loving people are two of those things that MUST work together, and I want to go on the World Race because I am sure I will have a plethora of opportunities to do both.
Finally, I want to go on the World Race because I believe that Christians these days have lives that are entirely too safe! I feel like the times in which you learn the most about God and about yourself are when you're putting yourself out there, taking risks, and having to trust in something greater than yourself. By that logic, it stands to reason that, if you're never taking risks and never releasing that vice-like grip you have on your life, then you're never going to learn anything meaningful about God or about yourself. The reason why we don't take risks for God is because it's dangerous, and because we're scared. Well, it is dangerous, and I am scared. But, it's like a friend of mine recently told me, "Being in God's will is the second most dangerous place that you can ever be. The most dangerous place is being OUT of God's will." So, you can call me reckless and immoderate, but the lack of safety is one of the main reasons that I want to go on the Race. And, honestly, I'd probably like it if you called me those things anyway. Haha :)
Peace,
Carter Gannon
Some of this stuff came from these three links. The first is the Frank Turner song. The second is a clip from a John Piper sermon, and the third is Francis Chan's "Balance Beam Skit."
